THE PETREL STATION TRIP REPORT

Had another awesome day out at 'The Petrel Station' on our latest pelagic seabird trip out of Tutukaka (in northern New Zealand).

The highlights of the trip were:

  • 3 Wilson's Storm Petrels

  • 67 Grey Noddies (Ternlets)

  • Approx 30 New Zealand Storm Petrels off the back of the boat at once

  • A spectacular super-pod of approx 200 Common Dolphins

During the trip we saw 18 different seabird species, and over 1,000 seabirds in total. The full seabird species list is below.

  • 1 x White-Capped Albatross (Mollymawk)

  • 12 x Fairy Prion

  • 3 x Cook's Petrel

  • 2 x Grey-faced Petrel

  • 65 x Black Petrel

  • 175 x Flesh-footed Shearwater

  • 90 x Buller's Shearwater

  • 40 x Fluttering Shearwater

  • 1 x Little Shearwater

  • 3 x Wilson's Storm-Petrel

  • 30 x New Zealand Storm-Petrel

  • 90 x Common Diving-Petrel

  • 400 x Australasian Gannet

  • 67 x Grey Noddy

  • 1 x White-fronted Tern

  • 7 x Black-backed Gull

  • 60 x Red-billed Gull

  • 44 x Pied Shag
