THE PETREL STATION TRIP REPORT

Had a great day out on the latest pelagic seabird trip to The Petrel Station, offshore from Tutukaka (in Northland, New Zealand). Conditions on the day were mostly fine, with steady 10-12kn southerly wind, and a small 1m swell.

During the trip we saw 19 different seabird species, and enjoyed watching just over 12,500 stunning seabirds in total! See the full trip list below.

Seabirds seen:

  • 3 x NZ Wandering Albatross (Gibsons)

  • 3 x Buller's Mollymawk

  • 2 x Black-browed Mollymawk

  • 10 x White-capped Mollymawk

  • 4 x Northern Giant Petrel

  • 10,000 x Fairy Prion

  • 2 x Cape Petrel

  • 4 x Cook's Petrel

  • 30 x Grey-faced Petrel

  • 115 x Fluttering Shearwater

  • 4 x Little Shearwater

  • 2 x White-faced Storm Petrel

  • 700 x Common Diving Petrel

  • 2 Little Blue Penguin

  • 700 x Australasian Gannet

  • 1100 x Red-billed Gull

  • 8 x Black-backed Gull

  • 37 x Pied Shag

  • 2 x Little Black Shag

Other marine life included:

  • 15-20 x Common Dolphins

  • 2 x Mako Shark

  • 30 x NZ Fur Seals
