THE PETREL STATION TRIP REPORT

We had another outstanding day out at the 'Petrel Station' on our latest pelagic seabird trip out of Tutukaka (in northern New Zealand). During the trip we saw 23 different seabird species, and over 13,000 seabirds in total. The full seabird species list is below.

Seabirds seen:

  • 3 x NZ Wandering Albatross (Antipodean and Gibsons)

  • 7 x White-capped Albatross (Mollymawk)

  • 1 x Buller’s Albatross (Mollymawk)

  • 3 x Northern Giant Petrel

  • 8,500 x Fairy Prion

  • 20 x Cook’s Petrel

  • 1 x Black Petrel

  • 55 x Grey-faced Petrel

  • 1 x Cape Petrel

  • 3,000 x Buller’s Shearwater

  • 100 x Fluttering Shearwater

  • 1 x Flesh-footed Shearwater

  • 12 x Sooty Shearwater

  • 50 x Little Shearwater

  • 12 x White-faced Storm Petrel

  • 17 x New Zealand Storm Petrel

  • 750 x Common Diving Petrel

  • 1 x Little Penguin

  • 700 x Australasian Gannet

  • 2 x White-fronted Tern

  • 50 x Red-billed Gull

  • 11 x Black Backed Gull

  • 59 x Pied Shag

Other marine life included:

  • Mako Shark

  • Dolphins

  • Seals
